Havana Cafe Restaurant Review

Havana Cafe Restaurant Review

Indianapolis, Indiana

Havana Café is a family owned Cuban restaurant located in a small strip mall at 38th and Moller Road. My friend, Dianne, and I arrived about noon for lunch. We were quickly greeted and had our choice of any table in the restaurant. There weren’t any other patrons but the noise from the TV in the dining room and the stereo in the kitchen was distracting.

Kelly, a friend from FC Tucker, suggested I try Havana Café. She said she and her husband love Cuban food and this is their favorite Cuban restaurant in Indy. I called her from the restaurant and she recommended the ropa vieja, moro rice or the ox tails.

We started with the guava and cheese empanadas – guava paste and warm cheese inside a flaky pastry. These had a balanced flavor and aren’t too sweet.

You can’t go wrong with the ropa vieja. Slow roasted, tender shreds of beef swimming in perfectly seasoned tomato & beef brothy goodness. I also ordered the Moro rice. Moro is rice simmered with herbs and black beans. This was good combination with the broth from the ropa vieja.

Along with the quick friendly service and the great Cuban comfort food this was a great recommendation. I look forward to try the oxtail or the Cuban sandwich next time.
